Reminiscences of a Surgeon eBook Shiban Kachru

"A big book is a big evil, it is said. This book is short, but large-enough. Here the author introduces us not to the knowledge and art that is modern surgery alone, but to the people and places and, yes, cases, that have gone into the making of his life as a surgeon. Part Bildungsroman, as the Germans have it, and part bemused travelogue, this book instructs as it entertains: here are stories of bone-setters in Kashmir, taxi-drivers and professors of medicine in Calcutta, and so much more, from Nairobi, Kenya to provincial towns in Germany and Saudi Arabia. Everywhere one senses an eye alert for details of persons in the places that set them apart: it is one of the pleasures of this book that in its manner, we see the kinship of the eye of the storyteller alive to his subject and the eye of the surgeon. (Reading this book I recall the wisdom in the fact that Sherlock Holmes was modeled on a surgeon, and Watson, the writer, is a doctor himself).

The author of this book tells us in an appendix devoted to a brief history of surgery that the word itself may be derived from the Greek for "work of hands". This book demonstrates what we all hope is true of our surgeons: that surgery is no mechanical labor, as patients are more than confections of tissues needing only to be cut. The author ends by reflecting on the work he ought to have found rewarding absent material compensation: "serving people, under adverse conditions, needs a particular mental attitude, one which I was lacking in at that time." This book rewards the reader in no small part for having been written with just such an attitude, and, let it be said, a generous sense of humor. I find myself wanting to read the book again. If only for the anecdotes it can take many lives to collect.

Reminiscences of a Surgeon eBook Shiban Kachru Reviews

As a layperson, surgery is a subject I think about very little. In fact, it's something I generally hope to avoid. Needless to say, I don't go looking for books on the subject. `Reminiscences of a Surgeon' was recommended to me as a memoir of a life spent around the world ¬(from India to Kenya, and from Germany to the Middle East.) And that's exactly what it is. In it, Dr. Kachru recounts a fascinating personal journey inspired by a thirst for adventure and a genuine love for his subject. He shares personal anecdotes which highlight that surgery is as much an art as it is a science - informed by intuition, honed by experience and full of the unique characters that add spice to life. The story is told with a simple style and a subtle sense of humor. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
