What's it like to be walking around as a normal 8th grader one day, relishing your role in the school play, thinking of ways to steer clear of your annoying little brother. . . when suddenly, in a matter of seconds, everything changes. . . forever?
This is the shock that awaits Fran Singer. One day, she's on top of the world -- and the next, her world is completely shattered, all because she causes an accident with tragic consequences that shoot her out of her ordinary orbit and into a world racked by guilt, shame, and complete alienation.
Starting over after all that isn’t easy. . . but it is possible, as Fran comes to learn.
Fran The Second Time Around edition by Amy Bernstein Children eBooks
Amy Bernstein has done a remarkable job in her first and ambitious novel about teen angst. Told in 4 sections which shift between Fran’s voice and the 3rd person, “Fran, the Second Time Around” tells the story of what at first one might take for typical teenage growing pains… until, with some deft foreshadowing, the reader comes to understand that Fran’s experience is anything but typical, and that there is neither script nor roadmap for Fran or her parents to come to terms with it.I find that Ms. Bernstein generally writes with better authenticity and authority when she writes as Fran. Fran’s inner voice and narration rings quite true in those sections. The 2nd section, told in the 3rd person, feels slightly too long and a little self-conscious. However, the final pages describing the crisis absolutely stunned me with the author’s deftness.
For a first novel with shifting voices as well as sequences, this book really is well worth reading, both for teachers and students or even fans of YA literature.

Fran The Second Time Around edition by Amy Bernstein Children eBooks Reviews
Fran is just the kind of plucky protagonist young girls need to read about. But she's not a cookie-cutter heroine. She has flaws and foibles and moments of self-doubt, just like we all do. And she has a big heart and the intelligence to see her through life's turmoil. You'll be rooting for her at every turn.
